17 August: Makassar’s Mayor, Danny Pomanto, is arming 6000 community chiefs with smartphones and is building an app, where they will be able to report suspicious behaviour. “We call them ‘social sensors’,” he says, and wants them to “monitor radicalism”. (Source: GovInsider)

4 May: The central government will start the construction of a 143-km railway line from Makassar to Pare Pare, South Sulawesi, in early July and will buy the tracks direct from China. The project is planned to be completed by the end of 2017, and begin operation in 2018. (Source: Jakarta Post)

17 March: Makassar is about to launch an e-payment system to enable businesses to pay taxes and fees online. The Mayor of Makassar has predicted the system will increase the city’s tax revenues by 200 per cent. (Source: Asia Pacific FutureGov)

13 February: According to Makassar Tourism Agency, Makassar received 3 million domestic tourists and 51,000 international tourists in 2014, representing an annual growth of round 27 percent. The city administration has pledged to upgrade tourist infrastructure, including roads, public toilets, signage and the Tourism Information Center at Losari Beach, which has been empty for some time. 26 December: The administration of Makassar city, South Sulawesi, has pledged to turn the illegal red light district on Jl. Nusantara into a culinary area by the beginning of 2015. (Source: Jakarta Post)

6 December: To protest the city government's failure to fix roads and drains to prevent flooding, local people planted two banana trees in the middle of Pajjaiang Road, Biring Kanaya, Makassar. (Source: Fajar)

13 November: A tall, white male was seen carrying a 3 kg gas cylinder down the street before disappearing into a warung. This prompted the Tribun-Timor to contest that LPG gas is intended for poor people. Elsewhere, students protesting against planned increases to the price of petrol clashed with police. (Source: Tribun-Timor)

8 November: Around 3000 people took part in a "Parade of Culture" to celebrate the 407th birthday of Makassar yesterday. The parade showcased the culture of South Sulawesi, including the traditional clothes, dances and songs of the Buginese and Makassar people. (Source: Fajar)

7 November: Students organised demonstrations at several sites around Makassar today to protest against planned increases in the price of petrol (gas). The petrol price subsidy is the single biggest outlay of the Indonesian government. New president Joko Widodo has vowed to reduce the subsidy to free up funds for infrastructure projects.
